Ingredients

  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • 1/4 cup melted butter or olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 teaspoons salt
  • 9 cups all purpose flour

Instructions

  1. In large mixing bowl, dissolve 1 package dry yeast in 2 cups of lukewarm water. Add 1/4 cup melted butter or olive oil, 4 tablespoons sugar, 4 teaspoons salt.

Add 3 cups flour to this and beat on high speed 2 minutes with electric mixer. Then add on high speed 3 more cups of flour. Add 2 more. Mix final cup flour by hand.

Dough will look lumpy and a mess, but this is it (direct quote from Grandma).

Cover with damp cloth and let rise in warm place for 1/2 hour or so.

Then in same bowl, punch down or knead for 25 punches total. By this stage it should be smooth. Cut dough in 1/2 and work on it.

Punch, knead or twist shaping it into a loaf. Same for the other half. Put into 2 pre-greased loaf pans and lightly flour on top of each.

Cover with damp cloth and again let rise, about 1 hour, before putting into the oven to bake.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees, bake about 40-45 minutes.
