Accessibility, Outdoor Improvements Top List

The demand for larger homes is on the rise, according to a recentl survey by the American Institute of Architects, which also indicates a greater interest in accessibility features and outdoor living spaces.

These findings are from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Home Design Trends Survey for the first quarter of 2014, which focuses specifically on overall home layout and the use of interior and exterior space.

“Facilitating greater accessibility into and around the home has become the dominant home layout consideration,” says Kermit Baker, PhD and AIA chief economist. “With home sizes increasing only modestly, households are investing more attention in exterior and property improvements,” he says.

While accessibility rose only a percentage point, survey respondents also indicated an 1 percent increased interest in a single-floor plan and a 3 percent greater interest in square footage. Some 6 percent of respondents indicated a greater interest in outdoor living space.

There has also been a 3 percent growth in interest in remodeling additions and alterations to existing homes.
