Shopping on 8th Ave. South

From downtown to Berry Hill, Eighth Avenue offers lots of shopping for the home decorator and designer—everything from flooring to antiques, and vintage to modern.

Start this trip at the Downtown Antiques Mall near 8th Avenue South’s intersection with Lafayette Street. Practically one of Nashville’s institutions, this antique mall features some amazing antiques that range from fine collectibles and vintage to items adapted for use by those with modern taste as well.

From there you can look down the sloping parking lot to the back of Ceramic Tile Distributors, which showcases a wide selection of tile ranging from glass and travertine to the latest in long vertical tiles designed for flooring in a variety of looks from barn wood to marble.

At the first intersection, turn left on Division Street and proceed to Myers Carpet, which has so much more than carpet. Whether you’re looking for hardwoods, area rugs, cork flooring, sisal in a variety of looks, or something else, this is a great resource.

Back on 8th Avenue South, proceed to ReStore, the new name for the Habitat store where you’ll find light fixtures ranging from the ordinary to the fabulous, such as the ones that arrived recently from a house being deconstructed in Annandale for someone’s new sense of style. You’ll also find furniture, small appliances, lamps, and more.

Further south, you’ll find Nashville Billiard Co. which has added an amazing array of theater seating to its long-standing selection of billiard tables, bar stools, and lighting.

Across the street, Remix Furniture shelters a number of consignment pieces that range from European and Oriental to early American. The shop recently moved from further south on Eighth Avenue and now showcases its collection on one level.

Exit the Remix parking lot. Turn right on Eighth for an easy turn into the All Seasons parking lot. This is a fascinating store offering items for garden lovers (inside and out), as well as Mystic paint, noted for its low VOC qualities. And if you were thinking of making wine or brewing beer, this is the place to explore your dreams and buy supplies.

Back on Eighth Avenue and heading south again, find Hanging Out, a custom frame shop, on the left, York & Friends Fine Art also has display here for works by some of the 40 artists it represents.
Approaching Wedgewood Avenue, Preservation Station is on your right. Offering what has to be the city’s most complete collection of architectural salvage items, Preservation Station features finds from historic homes, churches, and commercial buildings from across the country. Across Wedgewood, it’s hard to miss the bright blue lions that designate the entrance to Eighth Avenue Antiques, which offers a variety of items ranging from glassware and furniture to collectibles and more.

8th_ave_karmal_skillington_2012Proceed to Karmal-Skillington is a source for the widest range of custom made wood tables, chairs, cabinets, and more. Whether you’re looking for a primitive look or the sleek look of whitewashed Scandinavian pieces, Karmal-Skillington can furnish your living room, kitchen, dining room, and more.

Across the street, Pre to Post Modern offers original vintage pieces dating from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. These mid-century finds include modern furntiure and all kinds of decor for the atomic home.
On the left hand side of the street (facing South), Dealer’s Choice is worth a look if you’re serious about your antiques. Dealer’s Choice is noted for its antique auctions. Barry Wilkinson, owner, has been in the antique and auction business since 1983. The store deals in antique furniture ranging from Victorian and mahogany to French, Empire, and Country.

On the same side of the street, Epiphany features Eurpoean sophistication that includes an eclectic assortment including upholstered pieces, lighting, wood furniture, and accessories, all expressing the latest style. Today designer Julie Goad’s resources include cabinet makers, contractors, iron workers, and designers.

Across the street, Classic Modern is an outgrowth of American Classical Antiques which operated here for 30 years. Nashville’s exclusive Elite leather dealer, the store also offers a variety of vintage and retro furnishings including 50’s diner decor. The selection of furniture, lighting, art, and one-of-a-kind rare items from the 1820s to today. Looking for a classic diner table and chairs? You’ll find it here.

A couple blocks further south, at the intersection with Craighead, you’ll find Norbert’s Home Decor, a Nashville entity for 15 years. Owned by Betty and Norbert Borth, the shop offers a broad range of smaller furnishings including chests, tables, bar stools, mirrors and art, and decorative accessories.
Around the corner you’ll find Smith & Rogers Florist, which offers real florals and some decorative accessories including silk florals.

Back on 8th Avenue South, a left turn at the light will take you to Fabric Gallery, a shop offering a broad range of decorator fabrics including upholstery, drapery, and outdoor. You’ll find a selection of decorative trim as well as helpful advise on yardage required for a variety of projects.

One more block down 8th Avenue take a right turn at the next light will take you to Merridian furniture store, where you’ll find timeless treasures to complement and enhance any style at an affordable price. Merridian offers everything from upholstered furniture and solid wood furniture including tables, chests, beds, and chairs. In addition, the store can custom order a variety of pieces and offers a wide selection of upholstery swatches.
