Q. I would like help making my living room feel fresh and cooler in the summer. All of my furnishings were bought for my previous house in New York, but I had beautiful window treatments made since I moved. The fabrics are dark red, black, olive, and gold. Ask A Designer: Long Bedroom with Contrasting Wall

Q. I would like your opinion about a few ideas for my new bedroom. The room is long with a sitting area on one side. I plan to place the headboard on the smaller wall even though the model has the bed going the other way. My bed is a platform bed with lights around the headboard. I want to make the wall a contrast wall—but I don’t want a busy wall covering, because it would take away from the lights. I have art, but I’d rather treat the wall and keep it simple. What Will Bring Style to My New Home? Q. I have a house that was built a few years ago. It has a nice floor plan, but there is no trim and there are no interesting windows. What can I do to give it a more substantial look? I want it to look “designed” not just decorated with pillows and things. On the other hand, I can’t afford to rip up perfectly good floors and walls.
