Ask A Designer: Long Bedroom with Contrasting Wall

Q. I would like your opinion about a few ideas for my new bedroom. The room is long with a sitting area on one side. I plan to place the headboard on the smaller wall even though the model has the bed going the other way. My bed is a platform bed with lights around the headboard. I want to make the wall a contrast wall—but I don’t want a busy wall covering, because it would take away from the lights. I have art, but I’d rather treat the wall and keep it simple. Combining Detials for A Fabulous Space Q. I have a new house decorated in all neutrals. I love the clean, new look, but now I’m bored. I want some pattern and color. My husband “borrowed” some paintings and decor from his mother’s house to let me experiment. She has good taste, but everything looks like it needs to be in her house. I’ve been looking at magazines, and it seems like anything goes!

My husband and I planned to design a modern house, but changed our minds before we broke ground because we became convinced that resale could be a problem since the market is still sluggish and European styles are selling best.

Ask a Designer™ decorating a teenage room Q. My 16 year old daughter and I are redecorating her room. The decor will center around a fabric we bought that has huge black flocked flowers on a silky white. Bedding and draperies will have to be custom made which will use a lot of our budget.
