Use our garage remodeling ideas to turn your garage from a dirty dumping ground into a livable and workable space that you’ll enjoy spending time in.
In a lot of homes, the garage is a place to park the car, keep the lawnmower, or store a lot of junk. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The garage can be a place to store all those things as well as a place to get some work done and hang out once the work is complete. A few garage remodeling ideas can transform your garage into a brand-new space that you’ll want to spend more time in, whether to work on projects or chill with friends.
Upgrade the Floor
Garage floors aren’t much to look at. Often, they’re dirty and stained with an oil spot or two. The garage is a utility room where you get things done, but that doesn’t mean it can’t look good. Empty out your garage, give the floor a good power washing, and then cover it with a more aesthetically pleasing type of flooring. You have lots of different options, such as tiles, mats, and even paint, to protect the floor and make it look good.
Add Insulation and Drywall
If the inside of your garage is naked and you’re stuck looking at studs and plywood, consider finishing it. Line the walls with insulation and hang some drywall. The added insulation will better protect the garage from the elements and temperature swings. If the overhead door is thin and drafty, add some insulation panels to it, as well. Once you’ve installed the drywall, slap a coat of paint on it.
Make a Workspace
It’s okay to use the garage as a workspace—that’s what it was made for. If it isn’t equipped with the necessary workbench, cabinets, or toolboxes, then pick a corner and make it a functional workspace. Make sure there are plenty of electrical outlets for tools and adequate lighting so that you can see what you’re doing. Hang a pegboard over the bench for your tools and keep them at arm’s reach.
Create a Hangout Spot
Maybe rebuilding a carburetor or changing the brakes on the car isn’t for you, but that’s okay. Turn your garage into a spot to hang out and watch the game. Dust off the old college mini-fridge and fill it with your favorite beverages. Find a good spot on the wall to hang a TV, slide a couch into the middle of the floor, and get comfortable. Decorate the new party spot with some kind of central theme and stick with it.
