Paint/Color Trends for 2019

While gray remains popular as an interior paint color with some homeowners, others are shifting to greige, according to area designers. At the same time, designers report they are moving on from greige to shades of white and off-white. Samantha Lewis of the Hoover Paint store reports, “White and greiges are trending as well as white and off-whites as the popularity of the ‘farm house style’ continues to dominate in this area.” According to Kristie Banett of The Decorologist the trend in neutrals has indeed shifted toward white and off-white, as well as barely-there light grays and greiges. “These lighter neutrals …

Hot new designer buzzwords for 2019

Every industry has its own buzz words and lingo. In design, particularly sustainable design, we love to use “pop” (a pop of color, a pop of life, a pop of energy) and we love to use hygee (the Danish word meaning to give comfort, joy, and peace). Pop is easy for everyone to understand because it is literally like an exclamation point in a room—an accent, a focal point. Hygee, on the other hand, takes a little more explaining and little more thought—It is something to be considered. Hygee is tough because there is no literal translation in English and …

Kitchen Design Trends

Most industry experts agree that they continue to see white shaker-style cabinets more than other choices, and that hardwood flooring in a variety of shades remains a popular kitchen floor. Beyond these findings, however, there are discrepancies about views of colors, appliances, and kitchen design itself. Regarding kitchen design, Louise Frost of The Design Studio reports she’s seeing a growing interest in kitchen layouts and taking cabinets to the ceiling to maximize storage and expand the space. “”Our clients are cutting down raised bars and extending countertops into the living space, often adding bar stools,” says Frost. Gail Adkins of …

Wonderful Windows

While perhaps the driving force in today’s window trends continues to be energy efficiency and ease of care, homeowners also want high-quality windows that can do it all—function efficiently, provide energy savings, and add style to both the façade and interior of the home with lots of light and unobstructed views. When shopping for windows, homeowners should pay attention to more than looks, according to industry experts. According to Don Stewart of Window and Door Concepts, “Not only are there countless design options, but there are also many operational styles …

Fabric Trends

Fabric Trends Trends in decorating fabric cover the gamut of texture and colors, according to Bohnne Jones of Decorating Den Interiors. “There is definitely something for everyone, but we are starting to see a trend toward plush fabrics such as velvets and mohair. And performance fabrics are making serious inroads.” Experts report homeowners are favoring a broad range of color choices and are also mixing patterns and artisan accents. Those same authorities report that homeowners are extending their lives into outdoor spaces, and design is following suit with indoor-outdoor fabrics on upholstered pieces and a focus on neutral, earth tones …

Garage Trends

Garages have come a long way from the time when a small building was located behind a house to shelter a single car. Today, a home may have one, two, three, or more garages included in its footprint.

And those garages may include the latest in flooring and storage, and garage doors may range from a wood look to something more contemporary.

Bathroom Trends

Today’s bathrooms are the space offering homeowners the best opportunity to combine design with functionality. Large spa-like master baths with large multi-head walk-in showers and double vanities continue to be popular, while powder rooms allow home decorators to flex their design muscles. According to Allison O’Keefe of Cambria, “bathrooms have been spa-inspired—sprawling and luxurious—for several years, and that trend is not changing.” Color is also key, and tile in specialty designs creates a designer look with unique and functional finishes. One trend for many large master baths isinclusion of a large shower in preference to a bathtub, according to Bohnne …

Outdoor Kitchen Trends

Outdoor living invariably brings to mind outdoor kitchens, according to industry experts. “They are now ‘must-have’ addition to any home,” says Crystal Watson of Embers Grill and Fireplace Store. Carol Sullivan of The Hearth & Grill Shop says, “What better way to celebrate Middle Tennessee’s weather—even in December last year—than to enjoy outdoor dining?” She adds that with an outdoor kitchen a homeowner can eliminate running in and out of the house with food for guests. “Your outdoor kitchen can be anything you want it to be,” she adds. Watson says, “Some homeowners may add an outdoor kitchen/outdoor bar for …
